Can you tell us about Tania Purdy and the journey the business has been on so far?

I’m Tania, an artist and creative based in Derbyshire, and born in Nottingham. My work is all about helping people feel at home in their space and in themselves. The business started as a creative outlet when I was a new mum. I was trying to find a bit of myself again in between all the fun of parenting. It grew slowly through markets and online and has evolved into something I really believe in. My art, lifestyle products and the workshops are all about self expression, joy and building a life that reflects who you are.

What made you want to apply for Derbion’s Hatch initiative?

I’d had this dream for a long time about opening a space that felt different. A mix of creativity, connection and community. But like a lot of people I kept putting it off, waiting until I felt more ready or more confident. When I saw Hatch something clicked. I thought what if I just tried. What’s the worst that can happen? I’m really glad I did.

What makes your business unique?

It’s creative but also deeply personal. Everything in the space from the art to the products to the workshops is chosen to help people slow down, feel inspired and reconnect with themselves and each other. It’s not about being perfect or stylish for the sake of it. It’s about finding pieces and experiences that make you feel something and tell your story, whilst being surrounded by gorgeous things (because why not be). It’s also family friendly and mum friendly, with luxe me time thrown in too. I know what it’s like trying to do something for yourself with a crazy schedule or little ones in tow.

What is your goal for the brand?

In the long run I’d love to create a permanent lifestyle space. Part shop, part studio, part luxe community hub, and probably a coffee shop thrown in too. Somewhere people can create, connect and feel looked after. But right now I’m focused on building something meaningful with this pop up. I want people to walk in and feel like they are part of something beautiful and that they belong there.

How did it feel to hear that you had won this year’s Hatch competition?

I won’t lie. I panicked, felt excited and proud, questioned all my life choices then said yes. I realised I couldn’t say no. It’s so easy to doubt yourself when you’re doing something creative or starting something small. I’ve had plenty of moments where I’ve questioned whether I’m qualified enough or if anyone will really care. So getting that yes felt huge. It’s been an experience in following my intuition, building confidence and that it’s okay to take up space.

How has the experience of preparing your store at Derbion been so far?

Full on but exciting. It’s been late nights, paint under my nails, simultaneous drilling and childcare, spreadsheets mixed with sketchbooks but it’s come from a place of real passion. I’ve met amazing creatives and had so many supportive conversations. It’s reminded me that there are so many of us out here figuring it out as we go. The Derbion team have also been amazingly generous answering my questions and accommodating my ideas.

What can visitors expect when they visit your new store at Derbion?

A space that feels gorgeous, friendly and inspiring. You’ll find colourful art, a fun art sticker bar, beautifully made small batch lifestyle makes from curated brands, and a whole series of luxe and family friendly creative workshops. There’s something for everyone. From bookable cocktail and craft nights to relaxed drop in daytime sessions for families, days out, grandparents, new mums or anyone who wants a bit of calm. I want people to feel seen and welcomed whether they stay for five minutes or a couple of hours.

What would be your advice for anyone considering applying for next year’s Hatch initiative?

Do it. If it feels exciting just go for it. Especially if that little voice in your head is saying you’re not ready. None of us feel one hundred percent ready. But your idea matters and you don’t need to have it all figured out. Be honest about who you are and what you care about. The right people will connect with it.
